SUMMARY:Saving Ships\, Saving Fish: 150 Years of the Hammond Bay Station
DESCRIPTION:This September\, the Hammond Bay Biological Station celebrates a remarkable milestone: 150 years of federal government service standing watch over the Lake Huron shoreline and providing science to protect the health of Great Lakes fisheries.\nThe station’s story began in 1876 when it opened as a U.S. Life-Saving Service Station\, serving as a lifeline for sailors navigating the treacherous waters off Michigan’s northeastern coast. In 1915\, it transitioned to the U.S. Coast Guard\, and in 1950\, it took on its current identity as the Hammond Bay Biological Station. For the last seven decades\, the station has focused on pioneering efforts to control invasive sea lampreys and protect the fisheries vital to our region. Through every chapter\, one thread has remained constant: a dedication to service\, to the Great Lakes\, and to the communities that depend on them. \nWe hope you’ll celebrate with us! \nFor more information: \n\n\nUSGS Hammond Bay Biological Station: www.usgs.gov/hbbs \n\n\n  \nSaving Ships\, Saving Fish: 150 Years of the Hammond Bay Station \nWednesday\, September 30\, 2026 \nPart 1: Public Tours of Hammond Bay Biological Station \n\n\nTime: 1:00 PM\, 2:00 PM\, and 3:00 PM EST \n\n\nLocation: 11188 Ray Rd\, Millersburg\, MI 49759 \n\n\nDetails: Join us for an afternoon of public tours offering a firsthand look at the work—past and present—that happens at the station. \n\n\nRSVP: Spots are limited and pre-registration is required.
